Battling Style

Throughout the series, if Kino has a definitive style of battle, it would be survival. She doesn't do anything more nor less than survive. To accomplish this, she uses a wide variety of weapons, from knives to explosives. However, her main survival tools would have to be her guns.

On the left, The Woodsman, a .22 Colt Woodsman Match Target semiautomatic pistol. Its name, taken from the light novel, is derived from an instance in the light novel when Kino shot a branch off a tree with it that killed a bandit below. The gun in the middle is The Cannon, a .44 Colt 1851 Navy single action revolver that uses explosives rather than gunpowder (hence the name). On the right, The Flute, an Arisaka type 99 bolt-action sniper rifle.1

Kino doesn't get into many life-or-death situations in the series, but when she does, the way she handles them tends to vary. In episode 2, she was stripped of all of her weapons. As she was about to throw the last one down, a snow mound fell off of a tree and distracted her attackers so she could use her knife/gun combo to kill them all. She attributed it purely to luck, however it is clear that not anyone could have pulled it off. Also, in episode 12, she was surrounded by distraught villagers who wanted revenge on anyone they could find- in this situation, she used her gun to scare them off, without having to kill anyone. Kino always evaluates the situation before acting, and that is why she has such great survival instincts.

Crafty: The Battling Tournament

While Kino usually uses survival combat, the one time that she actually does truly engage her enemies is during a battling tournament. The rules were simple- whoever died or surrendered first was out. While this was a chance for Kino to show off her skills, she approached it in the same way that she approaches everything else in life: logically. She asked each of her opponents to quit so no one had to fight.

"I have two questions. First.. what brought you to this country?
Second.. won't you surrender?"

Given that everyone wanted to win, Kino had no choice but to fight. If there was one definitive style that she used the entire time, I can only describe it as crafty. She began each battle with a show of how talented she is at acrobatics, skillfully dodging each of her opponent's weapons. During this time, she would formulate a plan on how to win the battle. Generally she would wait for her enemy to lose their focus and then go in for the win. Of course, Kino being Kino never really wanted to kill anyone, so part of her victories always included methods of winning without actually killing her opponents. In three cases, they surrendered- in one, she had to knock her opponent out.

Kino's performance in the tournament really shows off what a remarkable fighter that she is. She's so much more than a quick draw- her logic, decision making and reflexes are all at the top of their game as well.
